N-word, Pleez!
Can you examine. just for a minute, the difference between what’s socially acceptable and what’s politically correct? There is a difference, is there not? Well, no, not officially.
If you’re an American, though, there’s always the excuse of flexibility. We make rules for ourselves and for the world, but, we’re flexible. Why? We’re not honest with ourselves or with the global “community,” is why.
For instance, for years we resisted granting Most Favorable Nation status to China. Why? They have a deplorable (by American standards, apparently not by Chinese standards) record of attention to basic human and political rights toward their populace. Further, they invaded a sovereign nation (can you name it) with complete impunity, from any practical point of view. And, in the end, they don’t give a f*ck. You don’t like us? Collectively blow us, thank you very much. Don’t expect to understand it. When you have a nation of billions of people, different rules apply, okay? You’re lucky to be a cog.
Finally, the U.S. simply gave up. We know we need the Chinese not to stir things up in the Far East. We also know that they are a significant world-wide economic force, if for no other reason than they can keep manipulating their currency and commerical markets at will as they are communists and don’t practice what appears in the “West” to be market-driven trade. They also leverage their global political will through simply NOT feeding the friggin’ North Koreans. Which makes that nation even more unstable than if they were travelling on even moderately tamped tummies. Yes, we gave up because the Chinese are relentless pursuers of empire, and they know how to do it.
So, now it’s okay that they imprison an (undisclosed) unkown number of religious, political and creative people. It’s okay that they conduct war games in the face of Taiwan, clearly as a warning for the Taiwanese to knuckle under and c’mon on home. It’s okay for them to snap up energy companies world-wide, not because they necessarily want the resources or technology, but because they have extreeeeemely modest management skills and want to know how to run these commerical concerns.
But what about terrorism? Snap out of it, would you? The British and Israeli have been dealing with these problems year in, year out for decades. It doesn’t go away and it never will. Look – if someone hates you because you merely exist, do you really expect to talk them out of it, especially when they’re not listening? N-word, pleez!
Let me sum up like this: America will not be a third-world country any time soon, but if innovation becomes a matter of style and economy, watch out. The Chinese don’t eat McDonalds and they sure as sh*t don’t shop at WalMart.
I lived in China. Actually, they LOVE McDonalds. They love KFC even more. PizzaHut runs a distant third.
And they do have a WalMart in China, and, given the chance, will shop there in droves. Now, where THEY get their cheap knock-off junk from, who knows. “Aw, cheap Cambodian crap!”
But I agree overall that the Chinese absolutely DO NOT give a damn about other cultures. Things that the US contemplates with shame (slavery etc) the Chinese would laud as a high point of national achievement. “Check it, we TOTALLY enslaved the crap out of those black people, and they couldn’t do anything about it, hahahah hahaha ahahaaaa, we ROCK!”
A scary anecdote: Walking past a magazine kiosk one day in Shanghai, I was horrified to find that only three types of magazine were on offer- Beauty Mags, Computer Mags, and How-China-Totally-Rocks-Militarily-Speaking Mags.
The entire Recovering Misanthrope blog has been relocated to circumverse.com along with some sister blogs. I think everybody that looks at this junk would love to hear more about it. Please reply with your link!
